Janice joined Film Division in 1965 as television studio director for the projected new series of overseas television programs to be known as London Line. She was the first television studio director that Film Division had ever employed. Serving in a number of different roles Janice worked for the Division until 1993. It was said that she one of the first three women directors in the television industry.
Janice arrived with many attributes, her preparation for a shoot was meticulous, she was able to get the most out of limited resources, she was always calm and unruffled in the most frenetic of situations. She was always pleasant but always very much in control of events.
The London Line programs were a new departure for Film Division. The concept of weekly studio based (with location inserts) programs was entirely new. It was steep learning curve for Film Division. Janice made a huge contribution to overcoming that curve especially in making the best use of the available limited studio resources.
Another major contribution to the London Line series was her work on the edition for the Arabic speaking countries Adwa Wa Aswat. The special issues arising from the production of this edition. These included being aware of possible issues that might offend religious susceptibilities. There were also problems in producing programmes in Arabic. She had to work in close collaboration with an advisor who advised on the programme content and provided script advice and translations. Several hundred Adwa Wa Aswat were produced over some 4 years without any errors or complaints from television stations.
Following decisions in 1969 to make a number of changes to the Overseas Television Services Janice now working as a Producer initiated a new series of programmes devoted to advances in science and technology Living Tomorrow. The series was produced in a number of different foreign language versions.
The complexities exploring a wide range of scientific and technological stories while producing programmes to a tight schedule required careful planning coupled with clear and rapid decisions Janice was one of those people who had the kind of calm, rational mind that all producers need at some point and her judgment was very sound.
These qualities carried into the 1980s and beyond when she moved to Home Production became a Producer of documentary films and television commercials.
