In the Sky 1980 This was a group of three 30 minute programs produced in 1980 on the theme of ‘man in the sky’ illustrating how new technology has influenced developments in air and space travel. The three programs were: Numbers in the Skythat looked at the relationship between the airline pilot and his aircraft and the new generations of electronics. Can computers control the aircraft better than the pilot. The conclusion of the film is that while technology can inform and serve, it takes the infinite flexibility of the brain of the pilot to maintain safety in the sky.Production:Illustra Communications Directed by Hugh Raggett People in the Sky looked at the way air travel once a daring adventure was now in 1980 a daily routine. The film follows one small girl flying on her own to Australia. Her journey is intercut with flash backs to earlier flight in frail canvas covered aircraft of the 1920s. Unique special effects were used to show the new generation of satellites.Production: IllustraCommunications Directed by Bill Metcalf The concept for this series arose from conversations that the London Television Service (LTS), the marketing arm of Film Division set up in 1976 had with television stations that were purchasing programs from LTS. In effect Film Division took a market led proposal and devised a group of subjects that reflected the Foreign Offi information objectives.
