A Woman’s Place This series of six 30 minute programs looked at some of the women in Britain in the mid-1980s who held down demanding and often unusual jobs. As with other short series the theme and the content was designed to be attractive to television stations and would be purchased and transmitted by them while at the same time serving the broad information needs of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. One of the programs in the series won a Silver Medal at the 1985 New York International Film Festival The series was produced in 1985 and consisted of the following profiles: A Woman’s Place - the City profiles and talks with the first woman to become Lord Mayor of the City of London in the 800 years of its history.(NFA ID 105405 NA ID INF34/1212) A Woman’s Place – The West Indian Community profiles Gloria Cameron who came to Britain in the 1950s as an immigrant from Jamaica. She talks about her life as magistrate, a prison visitor and the day care centre that she opened to promote understanding in a multiracial society. A Woman’s Place – Lady Mary Warnock - Test Tube Babies (click here to view) was about the philosopher and Mistress of Girton College Cambridge, Lady Warnock. She discusses her major report on the ethics of test tube babies and the ethics of IVF. The program was awarded a Silver Medal at the 1985 New York International Film Festival. (NFA ID N-528886)
A Woman’s Place – Saving the Childrena program that covered the work of HRH Princess Anne with the charity “Save The Children ” of which she was President. The program followed the Princess on a demanding tour of Bangladesh and examines the Save the Children sponsorship scheme in Africa, inner city areas and in developing countries. The New Technologyno further information A Woman’s Placewas produced in 1985 by Annabel Olivier-Wright. Versions were made in Arabic. French and Latin-American Spanish as well as English. It achieved widespread international sales.
